The Writers’ Room: Q&A

3rd October

When do you get to be in a room with hundreds of copywriters? Only at CopyCon.

This year, we’re making the most of it by asking and answering some of the most common questions we have for each other.

I’ll be hosting a conversation with three other copywriters to answer the questions that are on your minds.

They might be questions about careers, the services we sell, our craft, clients, stakeholders… Anything. Anything that might be on your mind as a professional words person.

Watch the space on social channels and email. We’ll be giving everyone a chance to submit their questions ahead of time, so we can make sure we cover as much as possible.

We can’t wait to read your questions and hear their answers at Copy Con’s first ever panel.

Panellists

Jess Bashford is joined by…

Claire Wilkinson – Verbal identity director, FutureBrand London

Claire Wilkinson has seen the industry from every side: agency, client and freelance. She’s currently the verbal identity director at FutureBrand London, where you’ll find her setting up new naming, voicing and writing practices.

Before that, she was creative director at the brand language agency, The Writer, shaping voices for the likes of HSBC, Emirates, Sainsbury’s, Booths and Barbie. And waaaay before that, she was a researcher on Harry Hill’s You’ve Been Framed.

Back to now, and she’s a firm believer that warm and chatty won’t cut it anymore, and is working to make verbal identity as distinctive – and ownable – as a brand’s logo.

Becky Tanner-Rolf – Senior Copy Director, Human After All

Becky has a BA in Comedy Writing, which – unexpectedly – led her into the world of copywriting.

She started at Comedy Central, crafting witty headlines, before venturing into fashion, PR, and then freelancing for seven years. Along the way, she took on a range of roles, from storytelling for exhibitions to branding schools and reporting for AdWeek.

A self-taught copywriter, she learned everything on the job by saying, ‘Sure, I can do that’. Reader, she was not sure. A decade later, it turns out blind confidence works. Now, as Senior Copy Director at Human After All, she shapes stories for clients like Google, Rainforest Alliance and TED. Her days are spent developing scripts, defining tone of voice, and crafting big creative ideas.

Becky holds a Master’s in Creative Writing from Cambridge University and, alongside her professional work, writes essays and poetry.
